The 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder petrol engine is fitted to the Corsa F, the newer Mokka, Crossland and Grandland, and a number of Combo Life and Astra L models. It came to Vauxhall after the Peugeot Citroen group bought the brand, so many owners are surprised to find their Corsa has the same engine as a Peugeot 208.
The timing belt on this engine runs inside the oil. When the oil is the wrong grade, overdue, or thinned by fuel from lots of short trips, the belt can soften and start to break up. The debris blocks the oil pickup, and on these engines it can also reach the brake vacuum pump, so a brake assist warning or a harder pedal can be the first sign that something is wrong.
The PureTech is also known for using oil between services. Low oil levels make belt wear worse, so we always check how much oil the engine is using, not just the belt itself. A car that is using oil heavily may have other faults we need to talk to you about before spending money on a belt.
Belt wear can be measured with the correct gauge through an inspection point, so we do not have to strip the engine just to find out. If the belt is within limits we record the reading and tell you when to have it checked again. If it is worn, we replace it with the full kit and clear the oil system of debris.

- Does my Corsa have the PureTech engine?
- Most petrol Corsa F models from 2019 do. Earlier Corsa D and E petrol models use a Vauxhall engine with a timing chain instead. Give us your registration and we will confirm which you have.
- Why has a brake warning appeared on my Corsa?
- On the 1.2 PureTech, belt debris can reach the vacuum pump that powers the brake assist. A brake assist warning or a firm pedal needs looking at straight away, so call us rather than keep driving.
- Can you check the belt without replacing it?
- Yes. We measure the belt through an inspection point and tell you whether it is within limits. You only pay for a replacement if it actually needs one.
