We test vans up to 3,000kg design gross weight as a DVSA-approved Class 4 MOT centre in Oldbury, and explain every result in plain English.

Why book with us

Van MOT Testing Oldbury with clear advice.

Most small and many medium vans are tested as Class 4, the same class as cars. That covers vans with a design gross weight of up to 3,000kg, which takes in the Transit Connect, Caddy, Berlingo, Partner, Combo, Kangoo and Doblo, plus plenty of mid-size panel vans depending on their spec. We are a DVSA-approved Class 4 MOT centre on Park Lane in Oldbury, so if your van falls in that bracket we can test it here.

We cannot carry out Class 7 MOTs. Class 7 is for goods vehicles between 3,000kg and 3,500kg, which includes most 3.5 tonne Sprinters, Ducatos, Boxers, Relays and large Transits. If your van is one of those, we still service and repair it, and we can get it ready for its test so it goes in with the best chance of a pass. The weight you need is on the manufacturer plate, usually in a door pillar or under the bonnet. If you are not sure, call us with the registration and we will help you check.

For tradespeople and small fleets, a van off the road is money lost. A failed MOT on a Monday morning can mean a missed job, a hire van and a customer let down. That is why we explain every fail and advisory clearly, tell you what is urgent and what can wait, and give you a written quote before any repair work starts. You decide what gets done and when, and nothing is touched without your say-so.

Vans pick up wear faster than cars. They carry weight, do lots of short stop-start runs and are often driven by more than one person. The usual fails we see are worn tyres, tired brakes, broken springs, blown bulbs, cracked windscreens and emissions faults on diesels. Many of these can be spotted early, so if your test is coming up we can do a pre-MOT check first and deal with the obvious items before the van goes in.

We are a family business and have been looking after vehicles in Oldbury since 1991, and we test vans for customers across West Bromwich, Rowley Regis, Smethwick and Halesowen too. We are open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm. To book a Class 4 van MOT, or to check whether your van is Class 4 or Class 7, call us on 0121 544 3736.

Common questions

Can you MOT my van in Oldbury?
Yes, if it has a design gross weight of up to 3,000kg. We are a DVSA-approved Class 4 MOT centre at 93 Park Lane, Oldbury, B69 4LP. That covers small vans such as the Transit Connect, Caddy, Berlingo and Partner, and some mid-size vans depending on their spec. Call 0121 544 3736 to book.
Do you do Class 7 MOTs?
No. Class 7 covers goods vehicles from 3,000kg to 3,500kg, such as most 3.5 tonne Sprinters, Ducatos, Boxers, Relays and large Transits. We cannot test those here. We do service and repair them, and we can do a pre-MOT check so your van is ready before it goes to a Class 7 test centre.
How do I know if my van is Class 4 or Class 7?
Look at the manufacturer plate, usually on a door pillar, under the bonnet or by the seat base. It shows the gross vehicle weight. Up to 3,000kg is Class 4 and over 3,000kg up to 3,500kg is Class 7. Two vans of the same model can differ, so check the plate or call us with the registration.
When does a van need its first MOT?
A van needs its first MOT when it is three years old, then every 12 months after that. You can have it tested up to a month, minus a day, before the expiry date and still keep the original renewal date. That gives you room to fit the test around your work.
What are the most common reasons vans fail?
The usual ones are worn or damaged tyres, brake wear, broken coil springs, blown bulbs, windscreen damage in the driver's view and emissions problems on diesels. Vans that carry heavy loads also wear suspension bushes and joints faster. A pre-MOT check helps catch most of these before the test.
Will a warning light fail my van's MOT?
Some can. A lit engine management light is a fail on most modern vans, and so are warning lights for things like the ABS, airbags or brakes where the van has them. If a light is on before your test, bring the van in and we can read the fault codes and tell you what it needs.
What happens if my van fails?
We show you each fail item and explain what it means. You get a written quote for the repairs, and we only carry out the work you approve. If you have the repairs done with us, we can arrange the retest. If a fail is dangerous, the van should not be driven until it is fixed.
Can you repair my van if it fails?
Yes. We handle the common MOT repairs on vans, including brakes, suspension, tyres, lights, exhausts and diesel faults like DPF and EGR problems. We quote first, then fix what you agree to. Keeping the test and the repairs in one place saves you running the van between garages.
Do I need to empty my van before the MOT?
It helps a lot. The tester needs to see the load area, check seat belts and inspect the body and floor. A full van can slow the test down or stop parts of it being done. Clear out the back and secure anything you cannot remove before you drop it off.
