Wet Timing Belts Explained: What Ford EcoBoost and PureTech Owners Should Know

What is a wet belt?

A traditional timing belt runs dry behind a plastic cover. A wet belt, sometimes called a belt-in-oil, runs inside the engine and is bathed in engine oil. Manufacturers use them because they run quietly and reduce friction.

You will find them on several popular small petrol engines, including the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost and the 1.2 PureTech fitted to many Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall models, among others.

Why wet belts can cause problems

If the oil is the wrong specification, is left in too long, or gets contaminated with fuel from lots of short journeys, the belt material can start to break down. Small pieces of belt then circulate in the oil.

Those fragments can block the oil pick-up strainer at the bottom of the sump. When that happens, oil pressure drops and the engine can be starved of oil, which can lead to serious damage. On some engines the belt that drives the oil pump is also affected.

Warning signs to look out for

An oil pressure warning light, even briefly, should never be ignored on one of these engines. Other signs include the engine management light, rough running, a drop in performance, or a message about oil pressure or engine fault on the dash.

If any of these appear, stop as soon as it is safe and call for advice rather than driving on.

How to look after a wet belt engine

Use exactly the oil specification the manufacturer lists for your engine, not just the right viscosity. Stick to the service schedule, and if you mainly do short trips it is worth considering an oil change more often than the maximum interval.

Belt replacement intervals on these engines vary by model and year and some have been revised by the manufacturer, so check your handbook or ask us. A belt inspection is a sensible idea on any higher mileage example.
