Ford EcoBoost wet belt and coolant faults

The 1.0 EcoBoost is one of the most common engines we see in Oldbury, and its belt-in-oil timing belt and cooling system both need watching. Call us with your registration and mileage to book a belt check before it becomes an engine rebuild.

Why book with us

Ford EcoBoost wet belt and coolant faults with clear advice.

Ford fitted the three-cylinder 1.0 EcoBoost to the Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport, B-Max, C-Max and Transit Courier from 2012. It is a lively, economical engine, but its camshafts are driven by a toothed belt that runs inside the engine oil rather than behind a dry cover. As the belt ages it can swell and shed fibres, and those fibres collect in the oil pickup strainer in the sump.

Once the strainer starts to block, oil pressure drops. The first thing most owners notice is an oil pressure warning, sometimes only for a moment when cornering or pulling away, followed by rattles and a loss of power. If the car is driven on, the turbo and crankshaft bearings are usually the first parts to suffer, and at that point the repair is a replacement engine rather than a belt.

The same engine is also known for coolant problems. Early cars in particular had issues with coolant hoses and overheating, and some were recalled. A 1.0 EcoBoost that loses coolant can overheat quickly and crack the cylinder head, so a slow drop in the expansion tank is never something to top up and forget.

We look at the service history, the oil that has been used and the mileage, then advise honestly whether the belt is due now or can wait. Where it is due, we replace the belt with the full kit, clean or replace the oil pickup and refill with the Ford-approved oil the belt is designed to run in.

What our EcoBoost wet belt job includes

Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.

  • Service history and oil specification check to judge belt condition and interval.
  • Timing belt, tensioner and associated parts from the kit for your engine.
  • Removal and inspection of the oil pickup strainer for belt material.
  • Fresh oil to the correct Ford approval and a new oil filter.
  • Coolant level and pressure check, looking for hose and housing leaks.
  • Road test and warning light check before we hand the car back.

Common questions

How often does a 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt need changing?
Ford has revised the interval over the years and it depends on the year of the car, so we check it against your registration. Many earlier cars are now due on age rather than mileage, so a low-mileage car can still be overdue.
My oil light came on for a second. Is it safe to drive?
On a 1.0 EcoBoost we would not risk it. A flickering oil light is one of the first signs of a blocked pickup. Stop, check the oil level and call us so we can take a look before any damage is done.
Can you just change the belt without doing the oil pickup?
We would not recommend it. If the old belt has already shed material, the debris stays in the sump and can block the new oil supply. Checking the pickup is part of doing the job properly.
Is it worth fixing an EcoBoost that has overheated?
Sometimes. It depends on whether the head has cracked or warped. We pressure test the cooling system and check compression first, then tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense for the value of the car.
