DSG is the dual-clutch automatic gearbox fitted to the Golf, Polo, Passat, Tiguan and Touran, and to Audi (as S tronic), SEAT and Skoda models. There are two main types. The 6-speed box used on larger and more powerful engines runs its clutches in oil, and that oil needs changing at a set interval. The 7-speed box used on smaller engines has dry clutches and a separate hydraulic unit, known as the mechatronic.
On the 6-speed wet-clutch gearbox, missing the oil service is the most common cause of trouble. The oil breaks down, changes become harsh or hesitant, and eventually the clutch packs and the mechatronic suffer. Changing the oil and filter on time is a fraction of the cost of the parts it protects.
The 7-speed dry-clutch gearbox has a different weak spot. Its mechatronic unit can develop hydraulic leaks or internal faults, which show up as juddering from a standstill, a flashing gear indicator, the gearbox dropping into neutral or refusing to select a gear. Clutch wear causes similar symptoms, so it pays to diagnose it properly before replacing anything.
We read the gearbox fault memory and live data, check the clutch wear values and adaptation, and road test the car. Then we tell you whether it needs an oil service, a clutch adaptation, a clutch pack or mechatronic work, and what we would do if it were our own car.

Common questions
- How often does a DSG gearbox need servicing?
- The 6-speed wet-clutch DSG has an oil service at a fixed mileage set by the manufacturer. The 7-speed dry-clutch box has no routine oil change in the same way. We check which you have from the registration.
- My DSG judders pulling away. Is it the clutch or the mechatronic?
- It can be either. Clutch adaptation, worn clutches and mechatronic faults all cause judder. We read the gearbox data and road test the car to find out which, so you are not paying for parts that are not needed.
- Is my car a DSG if it says S tronic?
- Yes. S tronic is the name Audi uses for the same family of dual-clutch gearboxes, and SEAT and Skoda use DSG. The servicing and faults are the same.
