Toyota has built hybrids for longer than almost anyone, and the Prius, Auris, Yaris, C-HR and Corolla hybrids are common around Oldbury. They need all the usual servicing, oil, filters and brakes, plus a few checks that a standard service schedule can miss.
The best-known fault is the inverter coolant pump. The inverter, which controls the electric motors, has its own cooling circuit and pump. On the third-generation Prius and the Auris hybrid in particular, the pump can fail with little warning, the inverter overheats and the car shows a hybrid system warning and may refuse to drive. We check the pump is running and the inverter coolant is at the right level and condition.
The hybrid battery is cooled by a small fan that draws air from inside the car, usually through a vent near the rear seats. The filter on that intake clogs with dust and pet hair, the battery runs hot and its life shortens. Cleaning it is a quick job that is often forgotten.
We also check the brakes carefully. Hybrids use the electric motor to slow down, so the brake discs are used less and can corrode and seize, especially on the rear. A hybrid that only does short trips can pass years with brakes that look fine from the outside but are not working as they should.

- Yes. You can use an independent garage and keep your manufacturer warranty, as long as the correct parts and fluids are used and the work is recorded. We do both.
- My Prius shows a hybrid system warning. What should I do?
- Pull over safely and call us. On a Prius, a common cause is the inverter coolant pump, and continuing to drive can damage the inverter. We can read the codes and confirm the cause.
- How long does a Toyota hybrid battery last?
- Many last well over ten years. Heat is the main enemy, which is why we clean the cooling filter. If your economy has dropped noticeably, we can check the battery health.
