Most diesel Qashqais, Jukes and X-Trails use a 1.5, 1.6 or 2.0 dCi engine with a diesel particulate filter in the exhaust. The DPF traps soot and burns it off in a regeneration, which needs the engine to run hot for a sustained period, usually on a faster road.
Many Qashqais spend their lives on short school runs and local trips, never getting hot enough to regenerate. The soot builds up until the DPF light comes on. If the car still does not get a proper run, it moves into limp mode, with much less power, to protect the engine.
A blocked DPF is often the symptom rather than the cause. A faulty differential pressure sensor, a sticking EGR valve, a leaking injector or an oil level that has risen with diesel from failed regenerations can all stop the filter clearing. If those are not fixed first, a cleaned or new DPF will block again.
We read the soot load, the pressure readings and the regeneration history, and check the oil level and condition. Depending on what we find, the fix may be a forced regeneration, a DPF clean, a sensor, or in some cases a replacement filter. We tell you which and why before starting.

- Can I clear the DPF light by driving on the motorway?
- If the light has only just come on, a steady 20 minute run at motorway speeds can let the car regenerate. If it stays on or the car goes into limp mode, book it in so we can check.
- Does my Qashqai need a new DPF?
- Not always. Many blocked filters can be regenerated or cleaned once the underlying cause is fixed. Replacement is for filters that are cracked or blocked with ash.
- Why is my oil level going up?
- Failed regenerations can leave diesel in the oil, which raises the level and thins it. That is bad for the engine, so we always check and change the oil if it is diluted.
