Land Rover 2.2 TD4 crankshaft failure
The 2.2 diesel in the Freelander 2, early Evoque and early Discovery Sport can suffer crankshaft and bearing failure, often after the oil has been thinned by diesel. We check the oil and listen for the warning signs. Call us to book a check.
Why book with us
Land Rover 2.2 TD4 crankshaft failure with clear advice.
Land Rover used a 2.2 litre four-cylinder diesel, badged TD4, SD4 and eD4, in the Freelander 2, the Range Rover Evoque up to 2015 and the first Discovery Sport. It is a strong engine in many ways, but a number have suffered crankshaft or big-end bearing failure, sometimes with the crankshaft pulley end breaking.
The most common trigger is oil dilution. Every time the DPF regenerates, a little extra diesel is injected, and if a regeneration is interrupted by switching off on a short trip, some of that fuel ends up in the oil. The oil level rises and the oil gets thinner, which reduces the protection the bearings get.
The early signs are a rising oil level on the dipstick or display, an oil service warning appearing early, a light knock from the bottom of the engine, or a low oil pressure warning. Once the knock is loud, the damage is usually done and the repair is a replacement engine, which is why catching it early matters so much.
We check the oil level, smell and condition for diesel, read the DPF regeneration history and listen to the engine. If the oil is diluted, we change it and look at why regenerations are failing. If there is a knock, we tell you honestly what it means and what the options are.
Freelander 2 and Evoque
All 2.2 TD4, SD4 and eD4 diesels, including early Discovery Sport.
Oil dilution checked
Rising oil levels are the early warning, and we test for them.
Regeneration history read
We find out why the DPF is putting fuel in the oil.

Land Rover 2.2 TD4 crankshaft failure
Our 2.2 diesel crankshaft check includes
Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.
- Oil level and condition check for diesel dilution.
- DPF regeneration history and soot load readings.
- Engine noise diagnosis for bottom-end and pulley knocks.
- Oil pressure and warning light check.
- Oil and filter change to the correct specification where diluted.
- Written advice on repair or replacement if damage is found.

Common questions
- Why is the oil level going up on my Freelander?
- That is usually diesel getting into the oil from interrupted DPF regenerations. It thins the oil and puts the bearings at risk, so book it in for an oil change and a check of why regenerations are not finishing.
- My Evoque has started knocking. Can I drive it?
- We would not. A knock from the bottom of the engine on the 2.2 diesel can be a bearing starting to fail, and driving on can turn a repairable engine into a scrap one. Call us for advice.
- Do newer Ingenium engines have the same problem?
- The 2.0 Ingenium that replaced the 2.2 from around 2015 has its own known issue with timing chain stretch rather than crankshaft failure. We check both on Land Rovers that come in with engine noises.
