The 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI turbo petrol engines were fitted to the Audi A3, A4, A5, A6, Q5 and TT, and to VW, SEAT and Skoda models. Earlier versions from around 2008 to 2012 became well known for heavy oil consumption, caused mainly by piston ring design that let oil past into the combustion chamber.
Some oil use is normal on any turbo petrol engine, but these engines can use a litre every thousand miles or worse. Owners often only find out when the low oil warning comes on. Running low on oil is the real danger: it starves the turbo and bearings, and on these engines it also puts extra strain on the timing chain tensioner, which was a separate known weak point on early engines.
The first step is to measure. We check for leaks, top the oil to a marked level and ask you to drive a set distance before we measure again. That tells us whether the engine is burning oil, leaking it, or losing it through a faulty crankcase breather, which is a much cheaper fix.
If it is burning oil through the rings, the proper repair is new pistons and rings, which is a big job. On an older, higher-mileage car we will be honest about whether that is worth it, or whether careful oil top-ups and a timing chain check are the sensible way forward.

- How much oil use is too much on a TFSI?
- Any engine that needs regular top-ups between services is worth checking. If you are adding a litre or more every few thousand miles, book it in so we can measure it properly.
- Is the timing chain linked to the oil problem?
- Early versions of this engine had a timing chain tensioner that could fail, and low oil levels do not help. We check the chain whenever we look at oil consumption on these engines.
- Do I have to rebuild the engine?
- Not always. If a breather or leak is the cause, the fix is much smaller. If it is the piston rings, we explain the cost of doing it properly against the value of the car so you can decide.
