What brake fluid does

When you press the brake pedal, the brake fluid carries that force through the pipes to the calipers at each wheel. Fluid does not compress, which is what gives you a firm, reliable pedal.

Why it needs changing

Most brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the air over time. Water lowers the fluid's boiling point. Under heavy braking, on a long downhill or in stop-start traffic, the fluid can get hot enough to boil, creating vapour in the system.

Vapour compresses, so the pedal goes soft or sinks towards the floor and the car takes longer to stop. Moisture also causes corrosion inside calipers, pipes and the ABS unit, which are expensive to replace.

How often to change it

Most manufacturers recommend changing brake fluid every two years, regardless of mileage. Check your service book, as it is often listed as a separate item and is easy to miss.

You cannot tell the condition of brake fluid by looking at it. We test the water content with a tester so you know whether it is due.

Signs something is wrong

A soft or spongy pedal, a pedal that travels further than it used to, or the brake warning light on the dash all need checking straight away. A low fluid level can point to worn pads or a leak, and both need attention.
