The three-year MOT rule

Your car first needs an MOT when it is three years old. After that, a new MOT is due every 12 months from the date your previous test passed.

You can book your MOT up to one month early without losing a month of cover — so if your test passes in September, you can book for August and still get a full 12 months of cover from the new pass date.

How to check your MOT due date

The easiest way is to use the DVLA checker below. Enter your registration number and the system will show your MOT history and exactly when your next test is due.
