What a timing belt does

The timing belt synchronizes your engine — it makes sure the pistons and valves move together in perfect timing. If the belt snaps or slips, the engine stops and the damage can be severe. On interference engines, a broken belt can bend valves and damage pistons, turning a £500 repair into a £3,000 engine replacement.

Timing belts wear with age AND mileage

Manufacturers set two limits: mileage (often 60,000 to 120,000 miles) and age (typically 5 to 10 years). Rubber does not last forever. Even if you drive low miles, a belt that is 10 years old is at risk. We check both your mileage and age to tell you when the belt is actually due.

Why it makes sense to do the water pump too

On many engines, the water pump is behind the timing belt. When we replace the belt, the pump is often accessible. Replacing it at the same time costs less in labour than doing the pump alone later when it fails. We advise when it makes sense for YOUR engine.
