When an older car needs a large repair, the natural question is whether it is worth spending the money or better to put it towards another car. There is no single answer, but there is a sensible way to think it through.

We have been fixing cars in Oldbury since 1991, and our honest view is that a well-looked-after older car is often worth keeping, as long as the underlying car is sound.

Compare the repair to what you would really spend

Comparing the repair bill to the value of your car is not always helpful. The better comparison is against what it would cost to replace it with something just as reliable, including the risk of buying a car with problems you do not know about yet.

A car you have owned for years comes with a known history. A replacement comes with somebody else's.

Look at the whole car, not just this repair

One big repair on an otherwise solid car is usually worth doing. The picture changes if the car also has serious corrosion, a list of MOT advisories building up, or a second major job likely soon.

Before you decide, it is worth asking us to look over the rest of the car so you know what else might be coming.

Safety comes first

Whatever the age of the car, brakes, steering, tyres and suspension must be right. If a car is not safe and the cost of making it safe is more than it is worth to you, that is when replacing makes sense.
