What clutch slip feels like

The most obvious sign is the engine revs rising when you accelerate without the car picking up speed to match. It is most noticeable in higher gears, going up a hill, or when you pull out to overtake.

You may also notice a burning smell, a bit like hot brakes, after a hill start or a queue of traffic. That is the friction material on the clutch plate overheating.

Other clutch warning signs

A clutch that bites very high up the pedal travel is often close to the end of its life. A juddering pull-away, a pedal that feels heavy or spongy, a grinding when you change gear, or a rumbling noise that goes away when you press the pedal can all point to clutch or release bearing wear.

On many modern cars with a dual mass flywheel, a knocking or rattle at idle, or heavy vibration when pulling away, can mean the flywheel is worn as well.

Why clutches wear out

Every clutch wears a little each time it slips during a pull-away, so life depends heavily on how and where the car is driven. Stop-start town driving, hill starts, towing and riding the clutch at traffic lights all shorten its life.

An oil leak from the engine or gearbox onto the clutch plate can also cause slip, which is why we always look for leaks when the gearbox is out.

Can I keep driving on a slipping clutch?

For a short while, usually, but it only gets worse. A slipping clutch gets hot, and heat can damage the flywheel and pressure plate. What might have been a clutch kit can become a clutch kit plus a flywheel.

Eventually it will slip so badly that the car will not move under its own power, often at the worst possible moment.

We road test the car to confirm it is the clutch and not something else, then give you a clear quote that tells you whether the flywheel is likely to need replacing too. We fit a complete kit so the clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing are all new together.
