Why Won't My Car Start? Battery, Engine, and Quick-Fix Guide

Complete silence — likely a flat battery

If nothing happens when you turn the key — no clicks, no dash lights, no sounds — the battery is probably flat. Try turning on the headlights. If they do not come on at all, the battery is dead.

A jump-start from another car can get you going, but once home, the battery needs charging or replacing. Batteries last 3–5 years depending on use and weather.

Clicks but will not turn over

If you hear clicking sounds but the engine does not crank, the battery is very low but not completely dead. Again, a jump-start will help, but the battery will need attention soon. Clicking also can point to a bad starter motor connection — corrosion on the battery terminals.

Engine cranks but will not fire

If the engine turns over but does not start, the issue is fuel, ignition, or compression. Common culprits are a failed fuel pump, a faulty immobiliser, bad spark plugs, or a fuel filter blockage.

This is where a diagnostic scan becomes valuable. We can read what the engine control unit is seeing and pinpoint the fault.

Quick checks you can do

Check fuel gauge — sounds obvious but it happens. Make sure the key is fully in and turned to start. Listen for a fuel pump whining sound when you first turn the key to on (before starting). If you hear nothing, the pump may be failed.
